I GOT THE DTs

Not Delirium tremens, but some serious Diamond Tail love.

Between surfs, me and DL probably spend way too much time talking surfing and a lot of the ideas from those discussions were poured into the shape of my Slide Projector. And ever since then I've just had a real thing for Diamond Tails - I like the way a DT can give you a shorter turning arc by in effect reducing the rail length, I like that it can also track similarly to a pin tail for smooth trim and I just like the aesthetic overall... Here are a few DTs from the innerwebs.

GREEN BLUR

Style for miles.

I've been hoping to come across this shot again for quite a while - I can remember having the original magazine and just soaking up the beauty of the full bleed double page spread photo. I'm pretty sure it was a JGB pic. Anyway, the ever-excellent Chrome Ball Incident posted it recently - thanks for that!

PETE FOWLER - INTERVIEW

Pete Fowler
Pete Fowler & Nessie.

Artist, illustrator, monster creator, toy designer, DJ, animator, musician, skater, etc, etc. Pete is a truly prolific talent, constantly creating and producing unique work. Along with his own company, monsterism, and a constant list of freelance commissions, he's produced work for Super Furry Animals, Magic Numbers, Kia Motors and ATP among others. It's quite safe to say that he's got a lot goin' on... He kindly sat down between moving house and working on numerous projects to answer a few questions about his work, his influences and his Kernow konnection.

Pete, I first met you rolling around on a skateboard - when & where did you start skating?

I started skating back in Cardiff in my mid teens after riding a BMX for a local shop for a while. Skating seemed way more exciting and cheaper than constantly buying new coaster brakes etc.

Do you still find time for the occasional nollie?

It's been a while since I had a skate, with broken bone and torn ligaments at the beginning of the summer, so could be a while before I lob a nollie but I can still remember some good ones I did.

Can you tell us about your connection to Cornwall?

I holidayed there with my family when I was very young and always loved it. My dad used to surf so the beaches were a really special place, quite like some of the beaches around past Swansea on the Gower coast. Later on I got into a fine art degree in Falmouth which was a great 3 years, making daft things and skating a lot with some of the best dudes I've met. I moved back there for a few years after I graduated, via the Scilly Isles!

QUALITY PEOPLES

Qpeople
If it's on the QPeeps then you know it's out there...

Quality Peoples has recently put up a few posts featuring peeps from our neck of the woods. Kernowfornia Dreaming, Adventures in Trim and Cloudsalt have all had a mention lately.

I really like checking out Quality Peoples, I think Ed has a great eye for a good image, so I have to admit to getting a bit of a buzz when I saw one of mine on his site a while ago.

IS THIS...

austerity
If so, does that mean we have just had the age of opulence?

I guess there's no love without hate, no highs without the lows, so maybe it's a yin yang thing.

And, according to my sources (Wikipedia basically). Yin yang is used to describe how polar or seemingly contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world, and how they give rise to each other in turn. Yin yang constantly interacts, never existing in absolutes. Yin and yang transform each other: like tides in the ocean, every advance is complemented by a retreat, and every rise transforms into a fall.

But importantly, Taoist philosophy generally discounts good/bad distinctions as superficial labels, preferring to focus on the idea of balance.

Ok, I understand the situation we find ourselves in isn't a natural occurence, it's a direct result of uncontrolled greed and can obviously be defined as bad. And I certainly don't side with the Torys and I loathe all political spin. But more redundancies are inevitable, so rather than freaking out about it (my first instinct) I'm hoping that austerity doesn't throw the flow out too much for those of us who are just doing our best and trying to keep life balanced.

Good luck out there people, keep the faith.

CONSISTENT

Chris Jones Newquay 1967. Borrowed from Vintage Surfboard Collector UK.

I'm all over the place; one day it's jumpers, the next it's fantasy-surfing under Mt Fuji, a while ago it was a shell nailed to a tree, I've even blogged about a tractor... Whole lotta random stuff goin' on.

But this guy knows how to keep on track. At Vintage Surfboard Collector UK, Alasdair consistently manages to stay true to his manifesto of posting about British surf history - I find that impressive. (Meanwhile, I was considering doing yet another post about Marvin Gaye tonight...)

Keep up the good work blogger!

This is a graphic I made a few years ago and sent to my friend Phil who lives in Tokyo. I'd love to go over there and visit him one day and share some waves with Mt Fuji in the background.
